Waiting For Change

Waiting For Change

I was recently contacted by Christina McCale, Author of Waiting for Change: Impacts on life, family, work, and the new 99% reality, for an opportunity to read and write a review of her book.

What a fascinating and wonderful book!

In Waiting For Change, Christina shares the story and impact of unemployment in our current recession, while also reflecting back to our own U.S. history with The Great Depression of the 1930's.

Honestly, my favorite part of her book is not in the historical facts or the well researched statistics, although I know many would find those added elements to be quite interesting.

No.  What I loved most, was reading her very personal story.  I could just feel (or perhaps relate with) the raw emotion as her story unfolded.

For many of us whose lives have been severely altered by the recession and unemployment, knowing we aren't alone in our devastation somehow helps us cope through it.  Even though the unemployment numbers scream out that millions are unemployed, with our daily challenge to put food ...

How To Fight Unemployment Related Depression

How To Fight Unemployment Related Depression

The news recently reported that 23 million Americans are currently unemployed or underemployed.  23 million people!!  Think about that number for a moment.  What's the population of the state you reside in?

Let me give you a quick population picture from the US Census Bureau (as of 2011), for you to compare that number to:

  • Pennsylvania - 12.7 million
  • Oregon - 3.8 million
  • Oklahoma - 3.7 million
  • Illinois - 12.8 million
  • Texas - 25.6 million
  • California - 37.6 million
  • New York - 19.4 million
  • Colorado - 5.1 million
  • Nevada - 2.7 million
  • Florida - 19 million

Are you in shock?  I am!  How many states listed above could add up to 23 million people out of work?  Look at the big states.  Nearly the entire state of Texas could fit the bill of 23 million unemployed.  Scary stuff!

If you or your spouse happen to be one of those 23 million Americans, please know my heart goes out to you, I'm praying for you, and I do understand what you're going through.

About 4 months ...

In Awe Of What God Is Doing

Friends, God has been stirring me up a lot lately.  He's working in amazing ways with the mission of this website and with my book.  There have been many days recently where I've literally sat in awe at His hand over this ministry.   Only God!   This plan of His was so much greater than any idea I could have ever come up with on my own.

Here are a few God things I want to share with you:

Praying Him Through Unemployment - 6 Week Prayer Guide

I recently felt led by God to create this FREE downloadable resource for you.  There isn't much we, as wives, can do for our husbands when they are dealing with the emotional turmoil of being out of work.  We can't get them a job.  We can't pull them out of a deep depression.  We can't make them feel worthy.

But - we can pray for them.  And prayer is so so powerful.  I've put together this 6 week guide so it's easy for you to print out and keep ...

Open Your Mind to New Possibilities

Open Your Mind to New Possibilities

It's disheartening when old dreams die and we're left holding the broken pieces with no certainty for what the future may hold.  Still, we should approach new dreams and ideas with an open mind and willing heart.

I've always been a big dreamer.

My entire childhood I longed to escape the tiny town where we lived.  It felt suffocating and the people seemed small minded.  I had big dreams for myself.  One day I would finally graduate and move to Nevada where I'd attend UNLV for a degree in hotel/restaurant management.  Then I'd build the biggest hotel and casino the strip had ever seen.  At no time did I ever stop and ask God, "is this your plan for me?"

Not God's Plan?

Hmmm... Perhaps not.

Instead, I got married and joined the military straight out of high school.  That marriage soon ended in divorce and I found myself underwriting sub-prime auto loans for a living.  Which led me to meet and fall in love with my wonderful husband, which led to the blessing of our children.

Surviving The Unemployment Journey

I'm so excited to share this with you.  My first magazine mention!!

Woo Hoo!

Several years ago I wrote a special Father's Day tribute to my dad that I was lucky enough to have published in a local newspaper column. I always thought that was the coolest thing ever!

Then I wrote and self-published my first book, and that became the coolest thing ever.

Now, I'm getting a special mention in Women's Intuition Magazine. How cool is that?!  Sorry to go all valley girl on you, but I'm so giddy over this I feel like a teenager again!!  Ha!

Anyway, check it out!   Click on the expand button and it should bring it up close and personal for you to read the article, which by the way, is a really great article about surviving unemployment.  It was written by Ann Parmenter of Hope Springs Counseling.   I think you'll enjoy it.

3 Reasons Not To Give Up

You're out of work.

Unemployed.

Laid off.

Again!

This is one of those days when you feel defeated, backed into a corner, and too weak to fight back.   The embarrassment of being without a job is more than you can deal with anymore.  You feel like you've let down your wife and your children.   And you feel like society looks down on you for not being a better provider.

The words "I give up" burn through your heart and sting your brain.

Don't give up!

God Commands You To Be The Leader Of Your Home

In the book of Ephesians, Paul teaches about submission.  In a marriage, both husband and wife are called to submit to the other.  For the wife, this means willingly following her husband's leadership over the family.  For the husband, this means putting aside his own interests (and in this case, feelings) to care for the needs of his wife and his children.

You see, your wife is looking to you to lead the family.  The fact that our economy is in shambles ...

Don’t Let Money Worries Keep You From Being The Best Mom Possible

Don’t Let Money Worries Keep You From Being The Best Mom Possible

My daughter has just placed "a magic crown" on my head that she says will turn me into a princess.  Yes, as I type this note of encouragement to you, I'm wearing Cinderella's crown…and exercise clothes.  It's precious moments like these that remind me of the blessing of being a mom.

Even while my husband was jobless, I was blessed to be a stay at home mom, a role I have always taken very seriously.

Sadly, the stress of not having a lot of money to come and go on, trying to keep my husband from falling into a deeper depression, and worrying about whether or not he would ever work again, consumed my mind and led to some not so proud parenting moments.

I lacked patience and would easily snap at the girls or break into a ball of tears which was something my then 2 year old and 5 year old didn't need to be confused by.  I struggled to smile or laugh with my daughters, too.  Most days, I simply went through the motions ...

How to Keep the Faith During Hard Times

How to Keep the Faith During Hard Times

Please welcome today's guest, Emily Kirchner!  A married mother of two twin girls, Emily also writes part time for Discount Catholic Products.  When she submitted her guest post to me, I just knew it was perfect for my UnEMPLOYED Faith readers.  I pray you'll be encouraged as you read what Emily has to say about keeping the faith during hard times.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s easy to be grateful when good things come our way. We feel blessed because things are working the way they’re supposed to and we thank God every day for these blessings. However, there are times in every person's life when obstacles come and make it hard to believe there's someone up there looking out for us.
Illness, tragedy and similar circumstances can make anyone—even the strongest of believers—question their faith in God. I have to admit, a series of painful events when I was younger led me to question my own faith. As I grew older, I learned to keep believing even when times seem hopeless. Here are some of them:
God, why aren’t you listening?
God, why aren’t you listening?
When my husband was unemployed, one of the most difficult parts of our journey was the wait.  We both knew God had our situation under control, but it was waiting for His plan to unfold that drove us emotionally crazy.
"God, why aren't you listening?"
It was a frequent question in my mind.  There were days I thought my husband would never find a job.  Even though he was applying and interviewing, with each let down and negative response from a perspective employer, his self-esteem dropped lower and lower.
So not only was I dealing with my worries and fears over our financial situation, but I also had to figure out a way to pull the love of my life out of his unemployment depression.
It was such a heavy and lonely burden.
I remember going to my weekly Bible study meeting with other moms and everyone would go around the room talking about their praises and prayer needs.
Honestly, I felt like my problem was so much more difficult than any problems the other moms had to face.  (it ...
No Problem Too Big For God
No Problem Too Big For God
Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.  The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"  He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet!  Be still!"  Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.  He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid?  Do you still have no faith?"
Mark 4:38-41
Imagine Jesus is standing in your home asking you the same questions.
"Why are you so afraid?  Do you still have no faith?"
How will you choose to answer Him?  The storm you're enduring is indeed rough and scary.  But what good will you do in sitting there allowing the worry to consume your every thought?  Don't let this trial you're facing destroy you.  Instead, put your faith in God.
Remember, there is no problem too big for God to handle.
